October’s Brown Bag – October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month

October 25, 2021 @ 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

National Disability Employment Awareness Month “Why Not”?

October 25, EST Noon to 1:00 p.m.

A panel of Experts from Virginia State Government agencies chat with the Division of Registered Apprenticeship.  The Title of the Program is “Why Not?”  We have discussed “why” inclusive recruitment and selection from ALL demographics gives employers a competitive edge….so why then are there still so many individuals willing to work on the bench?  Who’s on your team? Why not change the way you recruit and select?

Why tune in?

Jobs, jobs, jobs.  Why are there so many jobs and not enough warm bodies to take them?  Employers need to take a play from the United Nations and include everybody into the pool of potential candidates.  All individuals can have a dream job with Registered Apprenticeship and those with differing abilities can be included.  Our Experts:

Kate Kaegi, Career Pathways and Business Specialist at the Department of Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) where she works to increase the career pathways options for individuals with disabilities. She brings to this position over 20 years of experience helping individuals with their career choices, training options and employment.

John Gazzola, Employee Relations Manager at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).  He also serves as the agency ADA Coordinator, is a Certified Mediator.  John was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 1983 and has had a successful career, 34 years so far all within DMV.

David Leon, Director for Workforce Programs with Department of Aging and Rehabilitative Services.  David leads the agency’s employer engagement and business services team.  He is also the Project Director for the Rehabilitative Services Agency Disability Innovation Fund grant.

Michael Nakatsuka, Info Technology Specialist II, Department of Human Resource Management.  Michael had a diving accident while on Spring Break. He suffered a C5/C6 spinal cord injury. After rehabbing at the Shepherd Spinal Center in Atlanta, Georgia, he returned home to Midlothian, VA. He attended VCU and graduated with a B.S. in Information Systems and minored in English Literature and Mathematics. In 2021, he applied for a full-time position at DHRM and is now an Info Technology Specialist II.
