Struck By Fatalities

Many fatal accidents in the workplace occur when someone is struck by material, equipment, machinery, or vehicles. Each year many workers die from “Struck-By” accidents. In 2007 nationwide there were 504 total deaths from employees being struck by objects. Approximately 10% of all occupational deaths are from “struck-by” accidents. Working or walking below elevated work surfaces may expose you to falling objects. Materials being moved overhead expose you to falling objects. Heavy equipment can create serious struck-by hazards. Workplace traffic can also create struck-by hazards. In Virginia so far in 2018, 9 employees have received fatal injuries due to being struck by material, equipment, and vehicles. Six of these victims were struck by a vehicle. One employee was struck by a bulldozer while he was acting as a spotter. Another was filling potholes in mobile work zone when he was hit by a passing car. A third employee was hit by school bus operating in reverse. Other victims of fatal “struck-by” hazards included an employee being struck by a forklift and another received a fatal head injury when he was struck by a falling brick. Employees must be aware of working around equipment, materials, and vehicles in order to avoid “struck-by” injuries.
